West Marlborough, PA – PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll joined local officials today to celebrate the completion of a $1.3 million project to replace the bridge that carries Route 82 (Doe Run Road) over Doe Run in West Marlborough Township, Chester County. The bridge was originally planned to reopen in September, but the project was completed three months earlier than anticipated.
"I am thrilled to announce the early completion of this bridge, which was made possible through the collaborative efforts of our dedicated state and local partners,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “This structure not only enhances the landscape but also symbolizes our unwavering commitment to public safety. Safe and reliable infrastructure is crucial for our communities, and this bridge highlights PennDOT's ongoing mission to replace aging, structurally deficient bridges with modern, resilient designs."
Built in 1932, the Route 82 (Doe Run Road) bridge over Doe Run carries approximately 4,881 vehicles per day with nine percent truck traffic. The bridge was closed to traffic in November 2024 following a six-month interim inspection that determined additional deterioration to the steel beams and open grid deck of the 15-ton posted bridge.
PennDOT’s contractor, Loftus Construction Inc. of King of Prussia, replaced the superstructure and constructed a slightly wider concrete bridge deck. Construction included improving stormwater drainage, resurfacing the approach roadway, and installing abutment backfill, new signage, and pavement markings. In addition, new features include brown painted steel beams and guiderail that aesthetically blend with the Doe Run historic district’s surrounding area. PennDOT coordinated with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) on the project.
"The bridge's early reopening reflects the dedication and teamwork of all involved," said PennDOT District 6 Executive Din Abazi. "Their tireless commitment ensured this vital structure was restored safely and ahead of schedule."
