PennDOT Reduces Speed on Interstates 79 and 90 in Erie County

Due to continued periods of heavy snowfall, PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on Interstates 79 and 90 in Erie County. All other vehicle restrictions on interstates in the northwest region have been lifted.

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:

  • I-79 from Exit 166 (Edinboro/Albion/Route 6N) to the end of I-79 in Erie County; and

  • I-90 from I-79 to Exit 35 (Route 531/Haborcreek)

On roadways with speed restrictions, commercial vehicles not affected by restrictions on these or other roadways must move to the right lane.

The temporary restriction on certain vehicles from traveling on Interstates 79, 86, and 90 has been lifted.

PennDOT temporarily restricted certain vehicles from using the interstates beginning Monday evening to help ensure that the interstates remained open during the most challenging conditions of the winter storm.

The vehicle restrictions reflected Tier 1 of the commonwealth's weather event vehicle restriction plan.

While PennDOT recommends not traveling during winter storms, motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
