King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction continues on a project to provide long-term sinkhole remediation on Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:
- Friday, March 21, through late June, Route 29 (Morehall Road) will be reduced to one lane in both directions between Old Morehall Road and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange. During the lane closures, northbound Route 29 (Morehall Road) will shift to the left southbound lane, and the southbound direction will be reduced to one lane.
During construction, a temporary signal will be installed to improve traffic flow. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under this $22.4 million project, long-term sinkhole remediation is taking place on U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, and on Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County.
Currently, northbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) is closed 24/7 between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard through early June for sinkhole remediation.
PennDOT’s contractor will utilize a limited mobility grouting program, which will involve drilling a series of holes through the pavement in a “grid” pattern. Pressurized grout will be injected into the drilled holes to fill subsurface voids beneath the roadway. The filling of subsurface voids will help stabilize the ground beneath the pavement and will reduce the risk of future sinkholes. Additional work includes drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction.
Remediation of sinkholes on U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard and Route 29 (Morehall Road) between Great Valley Parkway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike on-ramp were deemed necessary for a long-term solution following reoccurring sinkholes and emergency repairs resulting in traffic disruptions along both corridors.
Heidelberg Materials, LLC of northeast region, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
