Atherton Street Update for Mid-October

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project, which stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College. Motorists traveling through the work zone can expect the following during the week of October 16:

On Thursday, October 19, the contractor will shift eastbound traffic heading toward Boalsburg from State College into the center (turning) lane between West Nittany and Logan avenues. Westbound traffic heading toward State College from Boalsburg will continue to use the right (travel) lane through the work zone. During this construction phase, traffic approaching Atherton Street from West Fairmount Avenue, Hill Alley, West Prospect Avenue, Daisy Alley, West Hamilton Avenue, or West Irvin Avenue may not turn left onto Atherton Street or drive straight through. All traffic from these streets must turn right.

Other work scheduled for the week of October 16 is as follows:

  • A crew will pave the left and center (turning) lanes between West Prospect and West Irvin avenues Monday, October 16, through Wednesday, October 18. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
  • A crew will install waterline at the Westerly Parkway intersection on Monday, October 16, and Tuesday, October 17. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
  • A crew will improve drainage between West Prospect and West Hamilton Avenue on Friday, October 20. This work will occur within the already closed lanes. PennDOT does not anticipate additional traffic impacts.

The contractor may reduce traffic to a single lane with flaggers in the roadway between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM throughout the week. One lane will always remain open in each direction during non-working hours.

PennDOT also urges motorists to pay attention to work zones and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently. Message boards alerting motorists to the construction zone and changing traffic patterns remain in place.

PennDOT posts updates and detour information on the Atherton Street project page weekly and encourages drivers to visit the page at www.penndot.pa.gov/AthertonStreet

Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.

HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.

PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
