Project Overview

County: Washington
Municipality: Coal Center Borough
State Route: NA
Local Route Names Involved: Water Street & Pike Run
Project Type: Bridge Rehabilitation
MPMS Number: 51404
Proposed Construction Start: Fall/Winter of 2026
Proposed Construction End: Summer/Fall of 2027
Last Updated: 05/08/2025

Located in Coal Center Borough, Washington County, Pike Run Bridge No. 1 carries Water Street, one lane of two-way traffic, over Pike Run and is generally oriented east-west. The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in January 2023 due to structural deterioration but currently remains open to pedestrian traffic. This project is needed to provide a direct and uninhibited connection between Coal Center and California Borough. The purpose of this project is to sustain regional connectivity and assure the safe crossing of the general traffic, emergency services, pedestrian and cyclists between Coal Center and California Boroughs.

The bridge is a 103’-long single-span, pin-connected Pratt through truss built in 1888 and consists of non-redundant steel tension members (NSTMs). The width of the structure is 17’-0” center to center of the truss and accommodates one lane of traffic and a sidewalk.

The bridge approaches on both the east and west sides feature horizontal curves that transition into tangential alignments at the bridge, ensuring a smooth transition across the structure. Additionally, the vertical alignment is tangent across the bridge, with a consistent 1.5% grade. On the west approach, full-depth reconstruction (1-foot depth) will be required, while the east approach will only require milling and overlay, with no full-depth reconstruction necessary.

This project will encompass both the bridge structure and the roadway approaches. Proposed improvements to meet the project’s objectives may include:

  • Rehabilitation of the entire existing bridge structure, which will involve replacing the superstructure elements and rehabilitating the substructure.
  • Installation of scour protection around the abutments through the addition of riprap.
