Bridge Replacement Project on Route 4023 (Black Hills Road) to Start in Somerset County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that Beech Construction, Inc., of Pittsburgh, will begin work on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, to replace the bridge that carries Route 4023 (Black Hills Road) over Beaver Dam Creek in Boswell, Somerset County.

Work starts on Wednesday with the contractor placing a 3.5-mile traffic detour on Route 4023 (Black Hills Road). Southbound traffic from Boswell will detour via Route 601 (Woodstown Highway) to Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) back to Route 4023 (Black Hills Road). Northbound traffic will follow the same path in reverse. Because of its proximity to the work zone, traffic heading west on Mountain Road also will be detoured from the bridge site to Four Seasons Road to Clay Road, to Route 601 (Woodstown Highway) to Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) to Route 4023. Motorists will use these detours until construction wraps in mid to late September.

The project involves the replacement of the existing bridge with a precast spread box beam bridge. Roadway work to be completed consists of new pavement, new paint markings and sign placement. To avoid impact on the stream, extensive shoring will be used.

The $1,142,880 project is weather dependent and is expected to be completed in September 2023.
