Online Plans Displays Available for Three-Bridge Project in Lykens Area, Dauphin County

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to online plans displays for three bridges in Dauphin County that will be bid in one contract. The bridges are located in and around Lykens Borough. Separate displays for each bridge is available to view online, with a public comment accepted through October 8, 2025.

These bridge projects include:

  • The Route 209-018 (Main Street) bridge superstructure replacement project over Wiconisco Creek in Lykens Borough and Wiconisco Township.
  • The Route 4013-016 (Powells Valley Road) bridge superstructure replacement project over Rattling Creek in Jackson Township.
  • The Route 4013-017 (Market Street) bridge superstructure replacement project over Rattling Creek in Lykens Borough.

The Route 209-018 bridge superstructure replacement project is located along Route 209 (Main Street) over Wiconisco Creek in Lykens Borough and Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, at the eastern border of Lykens Borough. The purpose of this project is to provide a sustainable crossing, while also addressing existing bridge deficiencies.

The proposed work includes replacing the existing bridge deck and adjacent box beams with spread box beams, bridge abutment repairs, full depth roadway pavement reconstruction at the bridge approaches, and sidewalk replacement at the bridge approaches and across the bridge. The proposed roadway width will remain similar to the existing conditions, maintaining 12-foot travel lanes and updating the shoulders to constant widths: 7 feet on the upstream side, and 7 feet, 8 inches on the downstream side. The proposed sidewalk width will be 5 feet, 11 inches.

The Route 4013-016 bridge superstructure replacement project is located along Route 4013 (Powells Valley Road) over Rattling Creek in Jackson Township, Dauphin County, approximately 1 mile south of Lykens. The purpose of this project is to provide a sustainable crossing, while also addressing existing bridge deficiencies.

The proposed work includes replacing the existing bridge deck and adjacent box beams with spread box beams, new bridge deck, bridge abutment repairs, full depth roadway pavement reconstruction at the bridge approaches, and upgrading guide rail to current standards. The proposed roadway width will remain similar to the existing conditions, maintaining the 10-foot travel lanes and widening the shoulders to a uniform 6-foot, 8-inch width.

The Route 4013-017 bridge superstructure replacement project is located along Route 4013 (Market Street) over Rattling Creek in Lykens Borough, Dauphin County, at the south end of Lykens Borough. The purpose of this project is to provide a sustainable crossing, while also addressing existing bridge deficiencies.

The proposed work includes replacing the existing bridge deck and adjacent box beams with spread box beams, new bridge deck, bridge abutment repairs, and full depth roadway pavement reconstruction at the bridge approaches. The proposed roadway width will remain the same. The existing sidewalk on the east side will be replaced and widened.

Construction on these bridges is expected to begin in the spring or summer of 2027 and be completed in the fall of 2027.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the projects and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns about them. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the projects.
