PennDOT Announces Online Plans Display for Route 2005 (Roundtop Road) Structure Replacement in Dauphin County

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plan display regarding the Route 2005 (Roundtop Road)

structure replacement over Iron Run, in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County.

The purpose of this project is to replace the existing single span steel rolled beam bridge supported on full height masonry abutments with a new structure comprised of a composite concrete deck, prestressed concrete box beams, and supported by integral abutments on steel beam bearing piles.

The existing structure, built in 1934 and rehabilitated in 1948, is a single span steel rolled beam bridge on full height masonry abutments on a 75-degree skew. The bridge length is 31 feet, with a 23-foot 10¾-inch curb-to-curb clear roadway width.

Portions of the existing stone masonry abutments will remain for scour protection. The proposed structure will include a concrete bridge deck along with PA Type 10M bridge barrier. Additional work includes placing rock scour protection at portions of the existing abutments that are to remain, reconstructing the pavement along the roadway tie-ins, and installing MASH-compliant guide rail, where applicable. The proposed roadway configuration will feature two 11-foot lanes and 4-foot shoulders, that will taper back into the existing roadway widths.

This section of Roundtop Road has an average daily traffic volume of 657 vehicles per day.

The bridge will be closed for approximately 6 months to all traffic during construction. The proposed 2.3-mile detour will use Route 341 (Colebrook Road) and Route 2002 (Schoolhouse Road) to route the traffic back onto Roundtop Road. Access to all driveways within the project limits will be maintained during construction.

Overhead utilities are present through the corridor; with the need for relocation still to be determined. A gas line on the western edge of the road will need to be relocated.

The project is currently in design, and construction work is anticipated to begin in 2027 and last approximately 6 months.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.

A digital version of the project plans and information will be available to view online through July 2, 2025.
