Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that various construction activities including milling, paving and bridge repair will continue at night next week on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia under a $36.8 million project to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, the associated on-and-off ramps, and more than 20 bridges.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:
- Sunday, August 4, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo interchanges for paving.
- Monday, August 5, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the Spring Garden Street and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo interchanges for guiderail and attenuator replacement.
- Monday, August 5, and Tuesday, August 6, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will be closed and detoured for paving. Motorists will be directed to use eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and exit at Montgomery Drive to access westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway).
- Monday, August 5, and Tuesday, August 6, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to southbound U.S. 1 (City Avenue) will be closed and detoured for paving. Motorists will be directed to follow the posted detour route.
- Monday, August 5, through Friday, August 9, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on eastbound and westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the 30th Street and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo interchanges for milling.
- Monday, August 5, through Friday, August 9, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on the ramp/merge from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) to eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) for bridge deck repairs.
- Tuesday, August 6, and Wednesday, August 7, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to Lincoln Drive (Exit 340A) will be closed and detoured for paving. Motorists will be directed to use westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), exit at Belmont Avenue and use the eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to access the ramp to Lincoln Drive.
- Wednesday, August 7, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on the merge lane from eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to southbound U.S. 1 (City Avenue) for guiderail installation.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under this contract, PennDOT's contractor will mill and overlay I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) pavement from U.S. 1 to I-676; perform concrete base, shoulder and barrier repair and replacement as needed; construct minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations; replace damaged signs; install new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips; and perform bridge repairs.
