Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction activities will occur at night next week on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia under a $36.8 million project to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, the associated on-and-off ramps, and more than 20 bridges.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:
- Sunday, July 21, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo for paving.
- Monday, July 22, through Friday, July 26, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on eastbound and westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo for milling, paving and guiderail installation.
- Monday, July 22, through Friday, July 26, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will be closed and detoured for bridge deck and concrete repairs. Motorists will be directed to use eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and exit at Montgomery Drive to access westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway).
- Monday, July 22, and Wednesday, July 24, from, 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from Montgomery Drive to eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will be closed and detoured for paving. Motorists will be directed to use Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Sweet Briar Drive, Lansdowne Drive and Girard Avenue to access eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway).
- Tuesday, July 23, and Friday, July 26, from, 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to Montgomery Drive will be closed and detoured for paving. Motorists will be directed to continue west on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), exit at Belmont Avenue and use eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to access Montgomery Drive.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under this contract, PennDOT's contractor will mill and overlay I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) pavement from U.S. 1 to I-676; perform concrete base, shoulder and barrier repair and replacement as needed; construct minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations; replace damaged signs; install new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips; and perform bridge repairs.
