PennDOT to Begin Frankford Avenue Corridor Safety Improvement Project in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin next week on a $2.8 project to improve travel and safety at intersections along the Frankford Avenue corridor in Philadelphia.

Under this safety improvement project, PennDOT's contractor will install new traffic signals, signal supports, and related equipment; replace and install signage related to the intersections; restore pavement markings; and install and retrofit LED luminaires.

The intersections with Frankford Avenue include Carteret Drive, Rhawn Street, Sheffield Avenue, Tyson Avenue, Harbison Avenue/Devereaux Avenue/Hawthorne Street, Wakeling Street, Oxford Avenue/Margaret Street/Arrott Street, Tioga Street, Ontario Street, Allegheny Avenue, Clearfield Street, Ann Street, Orleans Street, Cambria Street, Somerset Street, and Lehigh Avenue

Construction to improve these intersections will require temporary traffic lane restrictions and traffic shifts to complete trench work and temporary sidewalk/ramp closures to install new traffic signal supports.

Beginning Monday, February 20, through late September, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, periodic lane closures and/or traffic shifts may occur weekdays on Frankford Avenue between Lehigh Avenue and Harbison Avenue.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Kuharchik Construction, Inc. of Exeter, PA is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Work on the entire project is expected to finish in spring 2024.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
