Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers update on its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project, which stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College, for the start of August. Motorists traveling through the work zone can expect the following the week of August 7:
- Monday, August 7, through Friday, August 11, a crew will install a new sewer line at the Westerly Parkway intersection. Flaggers in the roadway will direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic as the traffic signal will be in "flash" mode.
- Monday, August 7, and Tuesday, August 8, two crews will grade and finish pouring new sidewalks between Beaver and West Fairmount avenues. This work will take place in the already closed lanes. PennDOT does not expect any additional traffic impacts.
- Wednesday, August 9, the contractor will shift westbound traffic from the Boalsburg end into the center (turning) lane between West Prospect Avenue and Calder Way. The left (passing) lane heading eastbound toward Boalsburg remains closed. Traffic will use the right (travel) lane through the construction zone.
- Thursday, August 10, and Friday, August 11, two crews will complete drainage work between Beaver Avenue and West Nittany avenues. This work will take place in the already closed lanes. PennDOT does not expect any additional traffic impacts.
- The right lane of Route 26 (Beaver Avenue) northbound heading toward downtown remains closed between H and Cresson alleys.
- The contractor will implement a new pedestrian detour. PennDOT urges pedestrians to use said detour and avoid walking through closed sidewalk signs into the construction zone.
- Message boards alerting motorists to the closures remain in place.
- Please pay attention to the directional signage posted within the work zone to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently.
PennDOT posts updates and detour information on the Atherton Street project page weekly and encourages drivers to visit the page at www.penndot.pa.gov/AthertonStreet.
Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.
HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.
PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
