Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project, which stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College. Motorists traveling through the work zone can expect the following during the week of September 18:
- A crew will place waterline between West Prospect and West Irvin avenues Monday, September 18, through Thursday, September 21. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
- A crew will pour new concrete sidewalks between West Foster and West Prospect avenues Monday, September 18, through Thursday, September 21. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
- A crew will continue placing brick pavers in designated sidewalk areas between College and Highland avenues Monday, September 18, through Thursday, September 21. PennDOT urges pedestrians to use the designated pedestrian detour route and avoid walking through the closed sidewalks into the construction zone.
- A crew will remove the old asphalt from the center (turning) lane and prep stone for new asphalt on Monday, September 18, and Tuesday, September 19. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
- A crew will replace the concrete curbing and island previously removed for traffic control purposes at the intersection of College Avenue and Buckhout Street on Tuesday, September 19, and Wednesday, September 20.
The contractor will not work Friday, September 22, or Saturday, September 23, to minimize impacts for those traveling to the Nittany Lions' home matchup versus the Iowa Hawkeyes. Long-term traffic control measures will remain in place.
PennDOT also urges motorists to pay attention to work zones and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently. Message boards alerting motorists to the construction zone and changing traffic patterns remain in place.
PennDOT posts updates and detour information on the Atherton Street project page weekly and encourages drivers to visit the page at www.penndot.pa.gov/AthertonStreet.
Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.
HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.
PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
