The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is providing an early July update for its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project in State College The work zone stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway. PennDOT anticipates the completion of this three-year project in the fall of 2024.
Area motorists can expect the following the week of July 10:
Monday, July 10 through Saturday, July 15, two crews will be working between Beaver Avenue and West Nittany Avenue installing new inlets and drainage pipe.
This work will be within the already closed lanes and will not further restrict the flow of traffic.
Monday, July 10 and Tuesday, July 11, one crew will be installing new sewer line from West Fairmont Avenue to West Prospect Avenue. An alternating traffic pattern will be enforced by roadway flaggers.
Wednesday, July 12 and Thursday, July 13, one crew will be installing new water line from West Prospect Avenue. Eastbound traffic pattern will be shifted into the center turn lane.
Monday, July 10 and Tuesday, July 11, one crew will be working between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue grading and placing topsoil. An alternating traffic pattern will be enforced by roadway flaggers.
Monday, July 10 through Thursday, July 13, one crew will be working between Beaver Avenue and West Foster Avenue installing foundations for new light and traffic signal poles. This work will be within the already closed lanes and will not further restrict the flow of traffic.
Aside from the restrictions listed above, no further traffic restrictions will be in place from Wednesday, July 12 through Sunday, July 16, due to the Arts Festival.
The two right lanes from Calder Way to Hill Alley remain closed, Eastbound traffic is reduced to one lane at Calder Way and then crossover into the left lane until Hill Alley where it will shift back to the right lane.
The left lane traveling Westbound remain closed at West Prospect Avenue and all through traffic will use the right lane through the constriction zone.
The right lane closure on Beaver Avenue remains in effect from H Alley to Atherton Street.
Message boards remain in place alerting motorists to the closures.
A pedestrian detour remains in place. PennDOT reminds pedestrians to use that detour and avoid walking through the construction zone.
Please pay attention to work zone and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently.
Visit the Atherton Street project page at www.penndot.pa.gov/AthertonStreet for mapping of these detours. PennDOT posts regular updates to the project page week-to-week, as work progresses. Detour information is also posted.
Overall project work will include roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.
HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million job. PennDOT reminds drivers all work is weather and schedule dependent.
PennDOT reminds motorists that traffic may be stopped intermittently for short periods during work activities. Please use caution when traveling through the work zone and do not follow construction equipment into the closed lane. When approaching the work zone, use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays.
