SR 2023 Section 550 Bridge Replacement Project in Susquehanna County

Dunmore, PA - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an in-person public meeting and online plans display regarding the SR 2023, Section 550, Bridge Replacement Project over Fiddle Lake Creek, Susquehanna County.

The purpose of the project is to provide a sustainable crossing over Fiddle Lake Creek that provides a two-lane bridge, addresses the structural deficiencies, and provides continued access to residents, businesses, and emergency services.

The existing structure consists of a stone masonry arch culvert with stone headwalls and wing walls. The existing arch culvert and wingwalls, as well as their foundations, continue to deteriorate, causing the need for replacement. The concrete-paved streambed that currently helps to stabilize the culvert foundation will also be removed as part of this project.

The preferred alternative consists of replacing the existing stone masonry arch culvert with a single-span prestressed concrete beam bridge with a span length of 60' feet. The new bridge will convey two nine-foot lanes, two-foot minimum shoulders for a new roadway width of 22'-0" feet, as well as a five-to-eight- feet sidewalk. The proposed condition is also anticipated to include a series of stepped rock pools in the stream to provide a more suitable environment for fish passage.

The roadway at the bridge site will be closed to vehicular traffic and detoured during construction. The vehicular detour is as follows: beginning south of the project area, the vehicular detour would follow SR 2040 (Skyline Drive), SR 171, and SR 374 (Old Newburg Turnpike) resulting in a 2.8-mile detour. A temporary pedestrian bridge will be placed at the project site to maintain pedestrian access throughout construction. The project is currently in design and is planned to be let in November 2024. Construction work is anticipated to take place in the summer and fall of 2025.

A public meeting for the SR 2023 Section 550 Bridge Replacement Project will be held on May 1, 2023, as part of the Union Dale Borough's monthly Council meeting. The meeting will be held at the Union Dale Borough Hall located at 84 Church Street, Union Dale, PA 18470. Doors will open at 6:30 PM for an informal viewing of the proposed plans, and the public meeting will begin at 7:00 PM.

A digital version of the plans display will also be available from May 1, 2023, to May 15, 2023. Online information, including the proposed detour route, detailed project information, and comment form, can be found by visiting the following PennDOT District 4-0 website:/content/copapwp-pagov/en/agencies/penndot, click on the Susquehanna County box, then choose the tile marked SR 2023 Section 550 Bridge Replacement Project in Susquehanna County.
