PennDOT Issues Update on Juniata County Bridge Project

Mifflintown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) issued an update on a bridge replacement project in Juniata County. The bridge spans Locust Run along Route 3002 (William Penn Highway), approximately two miles west of Thompsontown in Walker Township, and replacing it will improve its condition rating from "poor" to "good."

Beginning Monday, July 24, the contractor will start full-depth reconstruction of the roadway at the intersection. Drivers traveling William Penn Highway may not turn left onto Route 2007 (Locust Run Road) once reconstruction begins. Additionally, traffic from Locust Run Road may not turn left onto William Penn Highway.

Instead, drivers will follow a second detour that will run concurrently with the one implemented on May 30. Under this second detour, drivers heading westbound toward Port Royal will take Route 2009 (Freed Road), Route 2006 (Cedar Street), Locust Run Road, and Route 2005 (Center Road) back to William Penn Highway. Drivers heading eastbound toward Thompsontown will follow Center Road to Cedar Street, Cedar Street to Freed Road, and Freed Road back to William Penn Highway. PennDOT anticipates this detour will be in effect for five days.

The detour using Route 22 via either Route 75 at the Port Royal interchange or Route 333 at the East Salem/Thompsontown interchange will remain in effect for the project's duration.

Overall work on the project includes removing the existing bridge, constructing its replacement concrete box culvert, approach paving, guide rail installation, pavement markings, and miscellaneous construction. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $755,000 project. PennDOT anticipates completion in mid-August, but all work is weather dependent.
