Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 2 dedicated a Lemont bridge today in memory of fallen PennDOT worker John W. Coble. Mr. Coble was killed in a garage accident on June 19, 1972.
"John is a member of our PennDOT family and is among the five fallen workers we've lost across the nine counties in District 2", said District 2 Executive Thomas Prestash. "Today we honor John's memory and emphasize our continued commitment to safety on the job—first, last, and always."
The dedication was held off-site but close to the bridge, taking place in the parking lot of the Mt Nittany United Methodist Church. Speakers and attendees at today's event included Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, Coble family members, local veteran's organizations, civic leaders, and the general public.
The bridge named for Mr. Coble is located just east of the Lemont traffic signal on State Route 3011 (East Branch Road) and incorporates Mr. Coble's military service in the U.S. Navy. The bridge is now named as the Petty Officer John W. Coble Memorial Bridge. The 57-foot bridge was replaced in 2002 and carries an average of almost 7,800 vehicles each day.
