The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is providing a start-of-July update for its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project in State College The work zone stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway. PennDOT anticipates the completion of this three-year project in the fall of 2024.
Starting this afternoon, June 29:
The two right lanes from Calder Way to Hill Alley will be closed, Eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane at Calder Way and then crossover into the left lane until Hill Alley where it will shift back to the right lane.
The left lane traveling Westbound will be closed at West Prospect Avenue and all through traffic will use the right lane through the constriction zone.
The lane closure on Beaver Avenue will switch from the current left lane closed to a right lane closed from H Alley to Atherton Street.
The left lane closure on College Avenue will lifted, leaving all College Avenue lanes open approaching Atherton Street.
Access to the Graduate Hotel will continue to be from the westbound lane.
In observance of the Independence Day holiday, there will be no work on Friday June 30.
Area motorists can expect the following the week of July 3:
Due to the Independence Day holiday, no work will take place Monday July 3 or Tuesday, July 4.
Wednesday, July 5 through Friday, July 7, one crew will be installing sewer and water lines from West Fairmont Avenue to Prospect Avenue. An alternating traffic pattern will be enforced by roadway flaggers.
Wednesday, July 5 through Saturday, July 8, two crews will be working between Beaver Avenue and Foster Avenue installing new inlets and drainage pipe. This work will be within the already closed lanes and would not further restrict the flow of traffic.
Thursday, July 6 through Saturday, July 8, one crew will be working between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue grading and placing topsoil.
Wednesday, July 5 and Thursday, July 6, one crew will be working at the Beaver Avenue intersection running conduit for fiber optic line. As needed, a flagger will be assisting with traffic and pedestrian control in the area.
Message boards remain in place alerting motorists to the closures.
A pedestrian detour remains in place. PennDOT reminds pedestrians to use that detour and avoid walking through the construction zone.
Please pay attention to work zone and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently.
Visit the Atherton Street project page at www.penndot.pa.gov/AthertonStreet for mapping of these detours. PennDOT posts regular updates to the project page week-to-week, as work progresses. Detour information is also posted.
Overall project work will include roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.
HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million job. PennDOT reminds drivers all work is weather and schedule dependent.
PennDOT reminds motorists that traffic may be stopped intermittently for short periods during work activities. Please use caution when traveling through the work zone and do not follow construction equipment into the closed lane. When approaching the work zone, use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays.
Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
