PennDOT Announces Online Plans Display for the Route 1053 (Peartown Road) Stream Relocation Project in West Cocalico Township, Lancaster County

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to view the online plans display for the Route 1053 (Peartown Road) Stream Relocation Project located in West Cocalico Township, Lancaster County.

Current conditions include an existing watercourse which extends along the northern roadway shoulder. During rain events the stream frequently overtops its banks resulting in localized flooding and erosion. The purpose of the project is to provide a sustainable travel way by reducing roadway flooding and the reduction of more frequent repairs to correct roadway erosion.

The project involves the relocation of the existing watercourse to the southern side of Peartown Road. The existing drainage feature, a 48-inch pipe, will be replaced with 48-inch pipe at the approximate same location. Additionally, a second 48-inch pipe crossing will be installed upstream to safely covey the peak stormwater flow. The roadway profile will be adjusted to provide sufficient cover over the new pipe and improve surface water runoff. The roadway will additionally involve a full depth pavement removal and replacement.

The road will be closed to all traffic during construction for approximately 3 months. The proposed 2.3-mile detour uses Peartown Road to Township Road T-365 (Mountain Top Road) to Township Road T-376 (Golf Road) to Township Road T-993 (Laurel Ridge Road).

The project is currently in design and construction work is expected to take place in the 2027 construction season.

A digital version of the information will be available to view online through January 9, 2025.
