King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that preliminary construction will begin next week on a $36.8 million project to resurface and repair nearly five miles of Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway), the associated on-and-off ramps, and 23 bridges from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway) in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, and the City of Philadelphia.
Under this contract, PennDOT will mill and overlay I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) pavement in both directions; perform concrete base, shoulder and barrier repair and replacement as needed; construct minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations; replace damaged signs; install new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips; and perform bridge repairs.
Beginning Monday, May 1, I-76 motorists will encounter overnight left lane closures for survey and other preliminary construction operations.
The work schedule and locations are:
- Monday, May 1, and Tuesday, May 2, from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM the following morning, a left lane closure will be in place on sections of eastbound I-76 between U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) and I-676 (Vine Street Expressway); and
- Wednesday, May 3, through Friday, May 5, from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM the following morning, a left lane closure will be in place on sections of westbound I-76 between I-676 (Vine Street Expressway) and U.S. 1 South (City Avenue).
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100% federal funds. Work on the entire project is expected to finish in late 2024.
