Clearfield, PA – Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) named Trumbull Corporation of Pittsburgh as the apparent low bidder for its High-Speed Interchange project on Interstate 80. The bid amount for this second phase of a long-awaited improvement project providing a direct connection between Interstates 80 and 99 in Centre County came in at $259 million.
“This is an exciting day for PennDOT, Centre County, and all of the stakeholders involved with this project," said District 2 Executive Thomas Prestash. “This construction will greatly benefit our region by enhancing safety for motorists and making it more convenient to haul freight in and out of the area."
By providing a direct connection between I-80 and I-99 via high-speed ramps, this phase will eliminate the need to travel along Route 26 to access either highway. The direct connection will enhance safety by removing stop-controlled intersections and realigning service to local traffic.
PennDOT anticipates issuing notice to proceed in July, with construction occurring over the next six construction seasons, ending in 2030. Approximately $170 million of the funding for this $259 million project is from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).
PennDOT plans to open bids on a third phase involving the reconstruction and widening of Route 26 between the Bellefonte interchange and Shay Lane in two weeks. Construction of that phase will begin this year and continue into the 2026 construction season.
The first phase involved the construction of the local access interchange at mile marker 163, which provided direct access between Route 26 and I-80 for local traffic. Construction on that phase occurred over three construction seasons between 2020 and 2022. The contract value was $52 million. That phase benefited from a $35 million federal Infrastructure for Rebuilding American (INFRA) grant.
