Project Overview

County: Dauphin
Municipality: Londonderry Township
State Route: Route 2001
Local Name: Hillsdale Road over a tributary to Conewago Creek
Project Type: Structure Replacement
MPMS Number: 117216
Proposed Construction Start: Spring 2027
Proposed Construction End: Fall 2027
Last Updated: May 2025

The Route 2001, Section 018 structure replacement is located along Route 2001 (Hillsdale Road) over a tributary to Conewago Creek, in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County. The purpose of this project is to replace the existing masonry arch culvert and provide continued safe and efficient access on Route 2001 over tributary to Conewago Creek.

The existing structure, built in 1920 and reconstructed in 1982, is a masonry arch culvert on a 90-degree skew. The culvert length is approximately 10-foot, with a 17-foot 4-inch curb-to-curb clear roadway width.

The existing masonry arch culvert will be replaced with a 10-foot x 9-foot precast reinforced concrete box culvert on the same alignment in the same location with minimal approach roadway work.  Additional work includes placing rock scour protection at the inlet and outlet of the culvert, reconstructing the pavement along the roadway tie-ins, and installing MASH-compliant guide rail, where applicable.  The existing single lane corridor through this site will be updated to feature two (2) 10-foot lanes and 2-foot shoulders.

This section of Hillsdale Road has an average daily traffic volume of 326 vehicles per day.

The bridge will be closed for approximately 6 months to all traffic during construction. The proposed 5.8-mile detour will use T-486 (Gingrich Road), Route 441, and Route 4008 (Turnpike Road) to route the traffic back onto Hillsdale Road (T-304 and Route 2001).  Please refer to the project’s Detour Plan graphic. Access to all driveways within the project limits will be maintained during construction.

Overhead utilities are present at the site with temporary utility relocations anticipated.

The project is currently in design, and construction work is anticipated to begin in Spring 2027 and last approximately 6 months.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.

Additional Project Information

Environmental Considerations

The bridge is located in a rural area of Londonderry Township, with land use consisting of wooded areas, fallow fields, active agricultural land and a residential parcel. Pedestrian or bicycle facilities do not exist through this section of Route 2001 (Hillsdale Road Road).

In-stream work will consist of placement of a cofferdam and pump around system to provide a work area during existing structure removal and proposed structure construction.  Proposed construction in the stream will be the placement of a box culvert with baffled bottom to provide a future natural bottom for fish passage.

No wetlands were identified in the project area.

Coordination for Threatened and Endangered species has been conducted.

Cultural Resource investigations are currently being completed as part of the preliminary engineering studies.

Utilities

Overhead electric and data/communication lines and poles are present at the site. Utility relocations are anticipated temporarily to accommodate construction operations.

Maintenance and Protection of Traffic

The bridge will be closed for approximately 6 months to all traffic during construction. The proposed 5.8-mile detour will use T-486 (Gingrich Road), Route 441, and Route 4008 (Turnpike Road) to route the traffic back onto Hillsdale Road (T-304 and Route 2001).  Please refer to the project’s Detour Plan graphic. Access to all driveways within the project limits will be maintained during construction.

Construction Schedule and Cost

Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2027 and last approximately 6 months. The estimated construction cost is $750,000.
