Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project, which stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College. Motorists traveling through the work zone can expect the following during the week of September 25.
Starting Wednesday, September 27, the contractor will shift westbound traffic bound for State College from Boalsburg into the center (turning) lane between Logan and West Nittany avenues. Eastbound traffic heading toward Boalsburg from State College will continue to use the right (travel) lane through the construction zone. During this construction phase, traffic approaching Atherton Street from Hill Alley, West Prospect Avenue, and Daisy Alley may not turn left onto Atherton Street or drive straight through. All traffic from these streets must turn right.
Other work taking place the week of September 25 is as follows:
- A crew will place waterline between West Irvin and Logan avenues Monday, September 25, through Friday, September 29. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
- A crew will pave the center (turning) lane between West Foster and West Prospect avenues on Monday, September 25, and Tuesday, September 26. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
- A crew will make drainage improvements between West Prospect and West Irvin avenues. The contractor may reduce traffic to a single lane and have flaggers in the roadway between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM while this work occurs.
PennDOT also urges motorists to pay attention to work zones and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently. Message boards alerting motorists to the construction zone and changing traffic patterns remain in place.
PennDOT posts updates and detour information on the Atherton Street project page weekly and encourages drivers to visit the page at www.penndot.pa.gov/AthertonStreet.
Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.
HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.
PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
