Project Overview
County: Chester
Municipality: West Whiteland Township
State Route: Route 1001
Local Name: Ship Road
Project Type: Bridge Replacement
Last Updated: June 2025
The project involves replacing the current single-span concrete slab bridge on Ship Road over Valley Creek in West Whiteland Township. The existing bridge is in poor condition and has a 35-ton/40-ton weight restriction posted. Its deck and superstructure are deteriorated, with large spalls, exposed rebar, and longitudinal cracking. This bridge has concrete abutments and wing walls. The new bridge will be a single-cell precast concrete box culvert widened to approximately 40 feet from out to out, supporting two 11-foot travel lanes, two 4-foot shoulders, and a 5-foot sidewalk on the west side. The new structure will be 27.2 feet long. The barrier will be a brown-painted PA Type 10M. Both the bridge and approaches will be realigned westward to avoid impacting Clover Mill Creek and the nearby Evan Lewis House, a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places, on the east (downstream) side. The centerline will shift about 8.5 feet west, further downstream, to stay clear of the historic property. In addition to replacing the bridge, the project includes about 360 feet of pavement reconstruction to the north, 300 feet to the south, the installation of new brown-painted guide rails, new pavement markings, and six new inlets along the west side of Ship Road. Two inlets will be placed north of the bridge, and four south of it, connected to the existing inlet system on Sylvania Road. The current outlet near Sylvania Road will be moved to the wing wall of the new bridge. Right-of-way acquisition will be necessary, along with temporary construction easements for contractor access during the construction period.
