Information for Parents and Caregivers

The Pennsylvania Department of Health’s VFC Program provides vaccines to children who do not have health insurance. Children who are insured but whose insurance does not cover vaccines are also eligible to receive VFC vaccines at public sites, including local health departments, state health centers, Federally Qualified Health Centers, and Rural Health Clinics.

Is my child eligible?

Children who are 18 years old or younger and are in at least one of the following categories can receive VFC vaccines:

  • Medicaid-eligible
  • Uninsured
  • Underinsured
  • American Indian or Alaskan Native

What does “Underinsured” mean?

A child who has private health insurance, but whose insurance:

  • Does not cover vaccines
  • Only covers certain vaccines
  • Does not provide first-dollar coverage (e.g., copays, coinsurance)
  • Covers vaccines but has a fixed dollar limit or cap

Underinsured children can only receive vaccines at local health departments, state health centers, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), and Rural Health Clinics (RHCs).

How much will I have to pay?

All routinely recommended vaccines are free through the VFC Program. Health care providers can charge a fee of up to $23.14 to give each dose of vaccine. However, they cannot refuse to vaccinate your child if you cannot pay this fee.

Where can my child get vaccinated?

Ask your child’s health care provider if they are a VFC provider.

If your child does not have a health care provider, ask your local health department if they provide vaccines.

Refer to the VFC Providers map above to find a VFC provider in your area.
