It is important to practice safe sleep every time the baby sleeps, including naps. Sleep-related deaths are a leading cause of death for babies under one year of age. Practicing safe sleep is the best way to prevent sleep-related deaths in babies. Babies sleep safe when they are placed on their back in a safe sleep space with no other people, pets, or things at every sleep.

Too many babies get hurt or die from unsafe sleep. Parents need to know what is safe and what is not safe for babies when they sleep. Over time, guidelines for what is safe and what is not safe changed because of research. It can be hard to keep up with safe sleep information. To help parents get the right information, a law was passed. This law tells hospitals, birth centers, and birth providers to give parents of new babies safe sleep information. This way, every baby has parents who know what is safe and what is not safe for sleeping. Hospitals, birth centers, and birth providers need to do this before the baby goes home.
