Minimal traffic impacts expected
Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that overhead sign structure work is expected to begin next week on Interstate 81 in the Harrisburg area. Work on southbound I-81 will be between Progress Avenue and Route 22/322, and on northbound I-81 between Front Street and Route 22/322.
Weather permitting, work will begin Monday, January 13. Work will be performed during daylight hours for the next one-to-two weeks. The contractor will be working along the shoulder or in the median, so traffic impacts will be minimal. There will be shoulder closures between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
After this work is completed, overhead sign trusses will be installed during nighttime hours. This work will require stoppages on I-81 of up to 15 minutes. A press release will be issued prior to any planned stoppages.
This work is part of a project that includes bridge preservation work, approach pavement work, sign and sign structure replacements, and other miscellaneous construction on I-81 from Progress Avenue in the City of Harrisburg to the Susquehanna River at the George N. Wade Bridge in Susquehanna Township, and on Route 22 from Elmerton Avenue to about 0.5 miles north of I-81 in the city.
Travelers are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones for their safety as well as for the safety of the road crews.
Deblin, Inc., of Mechanicsburg, PA, is the prime contractor on this $9,884,046 project.
