Repairs to Begin Next Week on the Route 34 Bridge over the Juniata River near Newport in Perry County

Work is part of three-bridge project

Harrisburg, PA The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that structural steel repairs are scheduled to begin next week on the Route 34 bridge spanning the Juniata River in Newport, Perry County.

Weather permitting, work will begin Monday, July 28. Initial work includes jacking the bridge beams on the east end of the structure. On Tuesday, July 29, there will be a stoppage of up to 15 minutes in both directions for jacking operations and to install supports so floor beam repairs can be made under the structure. The stoppage will occur sometime between 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM.

In addition to the short stoppage, there could be daily lane restrictions under flagging from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM on the bridge.

This work is expected to take about two weeks to complete.

This work is part of a three-bridge project in Perry County that also includes box culvert replacements on Route 274 in Spring Township and Route 850 in Carroll Township.

Work on the Route 274 bridge, which spans Montour Creek between Limestone Ridge Road and Mahanoy Ridge Road, began in May. Traffic on the bridge is reduced to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Work on the Route 850 bridge, which spans a tributary to Shermans Creek just west of Route 34 at Dromgold Drive, began in June. The existing road will remain open until a temporary access road can be opened later this summer, likely in late August.

Dromgold Drive will be closed at Route 850 but will be accessible via Pisgah State Road.

Lobar Site Development Corporation of Dillsburg is the contractor on this $2,706,278 project. All work is expected to be completed by December 2026.
