Portions of the Bayfront Parkway, State Street Closed

Detour for Through Traffic Uses 12th Street, Waterfront Access Available Via East and West Front Streets

The Bayfront Parkway (Route 4034) is closed between Sassafras Street Extension and Holland Street, as well as State Street from Second Street to East Front Street in the City of Erie, Erie County.

A detour for through traffic is posted using Route 5 (12th Street) and Greengarden Boulevard.

Access to hotels, restaurants, and facilities along the waterfront is available via Sassafras Street Extension and West Front Street Extension or Holland Street and East Front Street. Drivers may encounter flaggers controlling traffic at the intersections along the waterfront side of the Bayfront Parkway.

The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately a year as major work on the Central Bayfront Parkway Project is completed, including the reconstruction of State Street and the parkway to create a grade-separated intersection with lanes to take through traffic beneath the intersection, shorter at-grade crosswalks across the parkway, and new traffic signals. Work will also be done near Holland Street to prepare for the construction of a roundabout and pedestrian bridge at that intersection.

To prepare for the closure and the change in traffic patterns, PennDOT made safety improvements at the intersections and along West and East Front Streets, including speed humps, high visibility crosswalks, and temporary traffic signals. Additionally, pedestrian flashing beacons and signals are being installed, and traffic signal timings will be monitored and adjusted as needed.
