Bayfront Parkway Closure to Start Tomorrow

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is reminding drivers that starting Tuesday the Bayfront Parkway (Route 4034) will be closed between Sassafras Street Extension and Holland Street, including the State Street intersection in the City of Erie, Erie County.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is reminding drivers that starting Tuesday the Bayfront Parkway (Route 4034) will be closed between Sassafras Street Extension and Holland Street, including the State Street intersection in the City of Erie, Erie County.

PennDOT expects the closures to be in place by the early morning hours of September 2, 2025, prior to the peak commute times. Therefore, drivers who typically use the Bayfront Parkway should plan to use an alternative route. A detour will be posted using Route 5 (12th Street) and Greengarden Boulevard.

Access to hotels, restaurants, and facilities along the waterfront will be available via Sassafras Street Extension and West Front Street Extension or Holland Street and East Front Street.

To prepare for the closure and the change in traffic patterns, PennDOT has made safety improvements at the intersections and along West and East Front Streets, including speed humps, high visibility crosswalks, and temporary traffic signals. Additionally, pedestrian flashing beacons and signals are being installed, and traffic signal timings will be monitored and adjusted as needed.

On Tuesday morning, drivers should be alert for possible flaggers controlling traffic at the intersections along the waterfront side of the Bayfront Parkway.

The parkway is expected to be closed for approximately one year. In connection with the work, State Street will be closed between Second Street and East Front Street.

During the closure, major work on the Central Bayfront Parkway Project will be completed, including the reconstruction of State Street and the parkway to create a grade-separated intersection with lanes to take through traffic beneath the intersection, shorter at-grade crosswalks across the parkway, and new traffic signals. Work will also be done near Holland Street to prepare for the construction of a roundabout and pedestrian bridge at that intersection.
