Harrisburg, PA – Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the opening of two new federally-funded Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations, bringing the total number of stations built in Pennsylvania using funds from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program to 19. With the opening of the two new charging locations, Pennsylvania is now tied for first in the nation in stations built using the federal funds.
“Pennsylvania is tied for the most operational NEVI stations in the nation, and more are coming,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “Governor Shapiro set an expectation from the top that we get stuff done for Pennsylvanians, and delivering EV charging is just one example of our commitment to that idea.”
“Our stores are already the ultimate one-stop-shop for travelers – offering fresh food, clean facilities and dependable convenience whenever they need it,” said Trevor Walter, Sheetz EVP of Petroleum Supply Management. “We are bringing that same convenience to drivers of electric vehicles across Pennsylvania. Partnering with PennDOT through the NEVI program gives us the ability to grow our network faster, by adding charging options at even more stores our customers already know and love.”
The 19 stations opened under the NEVI program, representing a federal investment of more than $10.5 million, building upon the Shapiro Administration’s determination to ensure the reliability and accessibility of EV charging and get things done for Pennsylvania travelers.
The new stations are at the following locations:
- Sheetz in Altoona, Blair County on along Interstate 99 (Exit 32);
- Sheetz in York, York County on Route 30 along I-83 (Exit 21).
PennDOT completed three funding rounds over the course of 2023 and 2024 focused on identifying charging station projects to fill gaps along Pennsylvania’s Alternative Fuels Corridors. A total of 90 active NEVI projects in 43 counties are now in varying stages of implementation and include a total federal investment of $58.4 million. A list of all NEVI awards is available on PennDOT's website.
On August 11, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) issued new NEVI interim guidelines for states to restart their NEVI programs after rescinding prior guidelines and approved plans in February. As a national leader, Pennsylvania will continue its competitive program and maximize available NEVI funds to provide a robust EV charging program in Pennsylvania. PennDOT submitted a new NEVI state plan and “build out” certification request to FWHA on August 27, 2025, in accordance with the new guidance.
