Project Overview
County: Chester
Municipality: West Whiteland Township
State Route: Route 100
Local Name: Pottstown Pike
Project Type: Road Widening, Additional Lanes
Last Updated: June 2025
This project proposes to reduce congestion along Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) by adding a third northbound travel lane. The additional lane would extend from the on-ramp from Pottstown Pike and continue north beneath the Amtrak railroad bridge and the former Norfolk Southern railroad bridge, finally merging with the existing shared through/right-turn lane at the U.S. 30 (Exton Bypass) eastbound on-ramp. The new lane will require minimal widening and will fit within the current available width under the Amtrak/SEPTA and Norfolk Southern bridges. No construction is planned for the bridges, including abutments and piers. The new cross section will include two southbound 11-foot through lanes and three northbound 11-foot through lanes. The existing median will be replaced with a narrower median shifted toward the southbound lanes.
Sidewalk will be installed along the southbound side of Route 100 from the U.S. 30 (Exton Bypass) eastbound off-ramp to Whiteland Woods Blvd. It will connect to the existing sidewalk within the Whiteland Woods community. No barrier will be placed between the sidewalk and the roadway.
A single-face concrete barrier is proposed along the northbound side of Route 100, starting around 200 feet north of Mountain View Drive and extending along the fronts of both the Amtrak/SEPTA bridge abutment and the pier of the former Norfolk Southern bridge. The median barrier will be replaced and shifted toward the southbound side for the entire project length. Guide rail and single-face barrier will be installed on the southbound side to protect the abutments and piers.
No work is planned on either the Amtrak/SEPTA bridge or the former Norfolk Southern railroad bridge.
