Project Overview
County: Berks
Municipality: Marion Township
State Route: 3037
Local Name: Charming Forge Road
Project Type: Bridge Superstructure Replacement
MPMS Number: 94290
Proposed Construction Start: Spring 2027
Proposed Construction End: Fall 2027
This project involves the superstructure replacement of a two-lane structure carrying Route 3037 (Charming Forge Road) over Mill Race, in Marion Township, Berks County. Marion Township accepted ownership of Charming Forge Road, now local road T-511, through PennDOT’s Turnback Program; however, PennDOT maintains ownership of the bridge. Route 3004 (Charming Forge Road) intersects T-511 approximately 40 feet south of the structure. T-511 (Charming Forge Road) becomes Route 3037 (Tulpehocken Forge Road) south of the intersection with Route 3004.
The existing single-span structure carries Route 3037 (Charming Forge Road) over Mill Race, a manmade stream, was constructed in 1941. The superstructure will be replaced in the same location with minor roadway approach work and minor repair and repointing to the abutments. The roadway typical section is anticipated to match the proposed structure lane and shoulder widths and utilize painted guiderail. Previous bridge inspections have resulted in weight restrictions from structural deficiencies caused by continuous deterioration.
Route 3037 (Charming Forge Road) has the functional classification of a rural local road through the project area, and traverses through rolling terrain. Route 3037, Route 3004, and T-511 are posted for 40 mph, however design speed is 55 mph. The project will utilize a closure and detour route.
