Online Plans Display for Hunterstown Hampton Road (Route 394) Bridge Superstructure Replacement and Rehabilitation Project in Adams County

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plans display regarding the Route 394 Section 010 (Hunterstown Hampton Road) bridge superstructure replacement and rehabilitation over Conewago Creek in Reading and Straban townships, Adams County. The purpose of this project is to provide a continued safe and efficient crossing on Route 394 over Conewago Creek.

The project involves the replacement of the bridge superstructure, reconstruction of beam seats, and rock scour protection around the abutments and pier. Minor approach roadway work including pavement reconstruction on Route 394 and Group Mill Rd (T-528), rock slope protection, and guide rail upgrades will also be performed. The horizontal geometry will closely match the existing geometry. Minor adjustments will be made to vertical geometry to improve stopping sight distance. The roadway and bridge will be slightly widened to accommodate 11-foot lanes and 2-foot shoulders, providing a 26-feet curb-to-curb width.

Route 394 will be detoured during construction.

Within the project area, Route 394 is a two-lane roadway located in a predominately wooded setting on rolling terrain and is classified as a Rural Minor Collector. The land use surrounding the roadway is predominantly wooded areas with residential properties farther from the bridge. The roadway within the project limits has a posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour and an average daily traffic volume of 1,304 vehicles per day.

The existing structure was built in 1935 and is a two-span steel beam bridge supported on stone masonry abutments and pier. The bridge is 116 feet, 2 inches long and 24 feet wide.

The project is currently in design, and construction is expected to occur during the 2027 construction season.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.

A digital version of the project plans and information will be available to view online, with public comments accepted through September 19, 2025.
