    PennDOT, Safety Partners Promote Safe Driving During Safety Day at I-95 North Welcome Center

    Boothwyn, PA – Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) partnered with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), AAA Mid-Atlantic, Pennsylvania DUI Association, Delaware County Transportation Management Association, and Upper Chichester Fire Department to promote summer season safe driving during a safety day at the I-95 North Welcome Center in Delaware County. The event featured safety activities and provided visitors with summer travel tips.

    The PennDOT Workers’ Memorial will be on display at the I-95 North Welcome Center through today. This memorial honors the 93 PennDOT employees who have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1970. It features reflective vests and hard hats mounted on stands. Bradford County maintenance workers created the memorial after the tragic death of their co-worker, Leah Rumsey, who was struck by a car while flagging in a work zone.

    PennDOT District 6 pays tribute to seven dedicated employees remembered on the memorial: Constantine Kozloski, James McDonnell, Gosiba Williams, Zebedee Reid, Elmer Waibel, John Scheibelhut, and James Williams, Jr. The memorial serves as a powerful reminder that the safety of workers in Pennsylvania's work zones is the shared responsibility of every individual using the state's roadways.

    Please remember the following important summer driving tips from PennDOT to keep yourself and others safe on the road:

    • Plan your route: Before you start your journey, check the weather, road conditions, and traffic.
    • Leave early: Give yourself ample time to reach your destination.
    • Buckle up: Ensure everyone in your vehicle is properly secured with age- and size-appropriate car seats, booster seats, and seat belts.
    • Stay alert: Avoid distractions and remain focused on the road.
