King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will continue through late July to reconstruct northbound Route 29 (Morehall Road) under a $22.4 million improvement project to provide long-term sinkhole remediation on Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, and on U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:
- Through Tuesday, July 22, northbound Route 29 (Morehall Road) motorists will continue to utilize a single southbound lane between Old Morehall Road and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange. Southbound Route 29 (Morehall Road) traffic will also be reduced to a single lane through the work zone.
Once work to reconstruct the northbound lanes has been completed in late July, a single lane of northbound and southbound Route 29 (Morehall Road) traffic will be shifted onto the newly built northbound lanes through mid-October, before median restoration and final paving will be performed to complete the project.
During construction, a temporary signal is being used to improve traffic flow. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under this improvement project, PennDOT’s contractor will utilize a limited mobility grouting program, which will involve drilling a series of holes through the pavement in a “grid” pattern. Pressurized grout will be injected into the drilled holes to fill subsurface voids beneath the roadway. The filling of subsurface voids will help stabilize the ground beneath the pavement and will reduce the risk of future sinkholes. Additional work includes drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction.
Remediation of sinkholes on Route 29 (Morehall Road) and on U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) were deemed necessary for a long-term solution following reoccurring sinkholes and emergency repairs resulting in traffic disruptions along both corridors.
Currently, northbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) is closed 24/7 between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, for sinkhole remediation.
Heidelberg Materials, LLC of northeast region, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
