Uniontown, PA – Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), in partnership with the Monongahela Police Department, Mid Mon Valley Transportation Authority, and Highway Safety Network, emphasized the importance of pedestrian safety during a statewide pedestrian enforcement wave, which runs through May 11.
Ongoing efforts to reduce pedestrian-involved crashes through targeted enforcement and public education were discussed. Monongahela Police Chief Kevin Harris discussed local enforcement activities focused on pedestrian-related violations, including drivers failing to yield at crosswalks and pedestrians crossing unsafely.
“Pedestrian safety is not just priority during enforcement waves, but every day,” said Chief Harris. “We want both drivers and pedestrians to think twice, slow down, and make choices that keep everyone safe.”
The Monongahela Police Department noted that enforcement efforts are being concentrated in high-traffic areas with a history of pedestrian incidents and other areas of concern.
According to PennDOT data, from 2022 to 2024, there were 60 crashes involving pedestrians in Washington County, which resulted in 11 minor injuries, 19 serious injuries, and one fatality.
