This Week's Level is: VERY HIGH
The West Nile virus risk in Pennsylvania this week is VERY HIGH. This means that West Nile virus activity has been found very frequently in mosquitoes in PA. It’s important to control mosquitoes around your home. Once a week, dump, drain, or treat artificial containers such as tires, buckets, bird baths, ornamental ponds, flowerpots, tarps, toys, etc. to reduce areas where mosquitoes can live. Personal protection measures such as using repellents, wearing long pants and long sleeve shirts are encouraged to avoid mosquito bites.
Beginning in October, DEP’s Tick Surveillance and Testing Program transitions into surveying adult Blacklegged ticks. During the summer, DEP’s Program focuses on the nymphal stage. Blacklegged ticks can be found throughout all of Pennsylvania and are responsible for the transmission of disease. DEP tests adults for the presence of Lyme Disease, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Hard Tick Relapsing Fever, and Powassan Virus.
The map above shows the likelihood of getting bitten by a tick carrying Lyme Disease during the next several months. It is less likely to contract Lyme Disease from adult Blacklegged ticks because they are more noticeable on your skin. The majority of Lyme Disease illness is associated with the nymphal life stage due their small size. Adult Blacklegged ticks will be active when temperatures are above 40° F. Personal protection measures are the best defense against tick bites and associated disease.
