Project Overview

County: Wayne
Municipality: Scott Township
State Route: SR 4043
Local Name: Branch of Sherman Creek
Project Type: Bridge Replacement
Proposed Construction Start: Spring 2024
Proposed Construction End: Fall 2024
Last Updated: July 14, 2023

The purpose of the project is to replace the existing structure that carries two lanes of traffic on Route 4043 over Branch of Sherman Creek in Scott Township, Wayne County. The existing structure consists of two 60” diameter corrugated plastic pipes that have been placed as part of an emergency replacement to an existing stone arch. This project also includes 50’ of roadway approach work along Route 4043 to allow for smooth transitions and bridge construction while a detour is in place.

Additional Project Information

The proposed alternative is a precast reinforced concrete box culvert. This alternative is wider than the existing structure in order to reduce the flow and velocity through the structure and eliminate concern for future scour at the bridge. The structure will provide a more uniform stream grade for fish mitigation. A bridge roadway width of 22 feet is proposed (two 9-foot lanes with 2-foot shoulders).

The roadway at the bridge site will be closed to all traffic and detoured during construction and is expected to be closed for approximately three to four months. Beginning south of the project area, the vehicle detour will follow T-787 (Mountain Road) and T-673 (Criddle Road) resulting in a 4.7 mile vehicle detour. Beginning north of the project area, the vehicle detour will follow T-673 (Criddle Road) and T-787 (Mountain Road) resulting in a 4.7 mile vehicle detour.
