    In pursuit of its mission, the Department of Revenue continually explores innovative technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), to enhance service delivery, improve operational efficiency, and better meet the needs of Pennsylvanians.

    Overview

    The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue is committed to the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). When adopting AI tools, we ensure that its use aligns with rigorous standards of privacy, transparency, accountability, fairness, and the preservation of public trust.

    As such, the Department of Revenue will never rely on AI without human review or intervention to:

    • Calculate your tax refund amount
    • Process or approve your return
    • Determine eligibility for a tax credit, rebate, or deduction

    Protecting Your Private Information

    All taxpayer information is handled according to strict confidentiality laws. These protections apply regardless of emerging technologies and we do not share personal tax information with AI systems.

    Do Not Use AI to Prepare Your PA Tax Return

    The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue is aware of increasing reports that taxpayers are using AI tools to assist in preparing their tax returns. While these tools may be helpful for general information, they are not a substitute for trusted tax preparation resources or professionals.

    Taxpayers should be aware of the following risks:

    • Entering personal or financial information into AI platforms may expose your sensitive data.
    • Accuracy is not guaranteed, as AI tools may provide incorrect or outdated tax information.
    • AI responses may not reflect PA-specific tax laws, filing requirements, or recent updates.
    • AI tools are not liable for errors that could result in penalties or delayed refunds.

    The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue reminds taxpayers that they are responsible for the accuracy of their tax return and to file using only qualified tax professionals or trusted tax preparation software, such as myPATH. Guidance and resources, including recommended federal and state filing services, are available.
