Shapiro Administration: Pennsylvania Schools Are Preparing Students for Infinite Possibilities of Success

Red Lion, PA - During a visit to Red Lion Area Senior High School today, Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin saw firsthand how the Red Lion Area School District is preparing learners for college, career, and life readiness and how investments in hands-on learning programs set students up for success.

“Learners across the Commonwealth benefit from innovative programs led by engaged educators that provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to reach infinite possibilities of success,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin. “Today’s visit demonstrated Red Lion Area School District’s commitment to college and career readiness through hands-on learning opportunities that align with students’ interests and future career goals.”

During the visit, Sec. Mumin interacted with students in the STEAM Ahead program, the Tech Department, and the district’s internship program. STEAM Ahead is a STEAM-based fieldtrip event for all Red Lion Area School District second-grade students run by high school students to participate in activities to learn about science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math.

“Initiatives like our STEAM Ahead program give students the opportunity to bring our vision of Real Learning for Real Life to reality,” said Superintendent Dr. Robert Walker. “It allows our high school and elementary school students to interact with each other to engage in real-world problem-solving activities. We also believe that it is important for our students to develop critical skills and dispositions through authentic learning experiences in order to be prepared for success beyond graduation.”

Governor Josh Shapiro’s inaugural budget included his top priorities to create a stronger economy, safer and healthier communities, and better schools. The budget made historic investments in education for students across Pennsylvania, including $567 million in basic education funding—the largest increase to the Basic Education Funding Formula in Pennsylvania history. It also included $23.5 million for career and technical education, giving every student the freedom to chart their own course and the opportunity to succeed—whether they choose college or career.

Acknowledging that student achievement requires a focus on wellness and holistic supports, 2023-24 budget also included $46.5 million in funding to provide universal free breakfast to students at Red Lion Area School District and thousands of other schools across the Commonwealth.

The mission of the Red Lion Area School District, in partnership with its communities, is to prepare all students to reach their greatest potential, thus becoming responsible and productive citizens.

The district serves nearly 5,000 students across several schools, including six elementary schools, one junior high school, and one senior high school. Red Lion Area Senior High School educates approximately 1,400 students in grades 9-12.
