Shapiro Administration Working to Reopen Damaged Route 6 Bridge in Bradford County by end of August

Montoursville, PA – At an event yesterday, officials with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) along with industry partners provided an update on plans to repair the damaged bridge in Troy Township, Bradford County.

The bridge, which carries Route 6 over Sugar Creek, was struck and damaged by an oversized load on Wednesday, June 12. PennDOT Maintenance in Bradford County and District 3 Bridge Unit responded to the bridge within the hour, resulting in the bridge closure. Inspection of the bridge continued late last week and into the weekend, with PennDOT and Dewberry. Industry partners are meeting this week to discuss preliminary repair plans and material needs.

“We know that Route 6 is a crucial highway to the people of Bradford County and the region, and fully reopening this road is just as important to PennDOT and Governor Shapiro as it was for I-95 in Philadelphia," said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “We're working to get this bridge restored and Route 6 reopened as quickly as possible."

Route 6 remains closed in both directions between Route 4017 (Leona Road) and Route 3034 (Mud Creek Road), Troy Township.

Detour Update

  • Passenger vehicles will use Leona Road, Route 4014 (Springfield Road), and Route 14.

  • Large trucks and Commercial vehicles will use Berwick Turnpike (Route 4013), Springfield Road, and Route 14.

“We will advance the project as quickly as possible," said District Executive Eric High. “Our goal is to have this completed and reopened by the end of August, but that is highly variable at this point and depends on when we can secure the needed materials to make the repairs."

The preliminary estimate to repair the bridge is between $1 million to $2 million. PennDOT has secured emergency funding to pay for the repairs. The investigation as to how the bridge was struck is ongoing.
