PennDOT Updates Vehicle Restrictions on Interstates in the Northwest Region; Speed Limits Restored

Some secondary routes remain closed

PennDOT has adjusted the vehicle restrictions on multiple interstates in northwest Pennsylvania affected by the winter storm.

The following roadways are now under a Tier 2 vehicle restriction:

  •  Interstate 90 westbound from the Ohio state line to the New York state line.
  •  I-90 eastbound from the Ohio state line to Interstate 86.
  • I-86 from I-90 to the New York state line.
  • Interstate 79 from Exit 147 (Meadville) to the end of I-79 in Erie County.

Under Tier 2 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:

  • Tractors without trailers.
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers.
  • Tractors towing loaded tandem trailers unless there are chains or another approved Alternate Traction Device on board.
  • Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV.
  • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.
  • Recreational vehicles/motorhomes.
  • School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches.
  • Motorcycles.

I-90 from I-86 to the New York state line is under a Tier 4 restriction.

Under Tier 4 restrictions, all commercial vehicles are prohibited. Additionally, all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes and passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers are not permitted on affected roadways while restrictions are in place.

Speed limits have been restored on all interstates in the northwest region.

The following secondary routes remain closed in Erie County due to the impacts of the winter storm:

  • Route 531 (Depot Road) from Davison Road to Buffalo Road in Harborcreek Township.
  • Route 5 from Cemetery Road to Freeport Road in North East Township.  
  • Route 955 from Nagle Road to Boyer Road in Harborcreek Township.
