Fast File for PA Personal Income Tax Return (PA-40)

The Department of Revenue has launched a new Fast File program to offer a free and quick way for select Pennsylvanians to file their PA Personal Income Tax Return (PA-40). The goal of Fast File is to offer a streamlined, online option for taxpayers who have a simple PA return, helping them to meet their tax obligations and avoid the expense of using other tax-filing services.

How Does It Work?

The Department of Revenue is mailing letters to taxpayers who are eligible for this program. The letters will:

  1. Encourage the taxpayer to use the QR Code on the letter to go to myPATH, the Department of Revenue’s trusted online filing system.

  2. Instruct the taxpayer to create a myPATH profile if they do not already have one by using the Letter ID at the top of the letter.

  3. Point the taxpayer to the option to file the PA-40.

    1. W-2 information from the employer will already be in the system, meaning there will be no need to upload anything or manually input information on income or taxes withheld.

Who is Eligible?

  • Single taxpayers who were full-time residents of Pennsylvania in the prior year.

  • Taxpayers who only had one W-2 income source (wages, etc.) from the same employer in the prior year.

  • Taxpayers whose employer has filed the corresponding W-2 form with the Department of Revenue to verify the employee’s wages and withholding.

  • Taxpayers who are not claiming any deductions, credits, or carry forwards.

  • Taxpayers who did not make any estimated payments in the prior year.

What Else Should I Know?

  • This is a process solely for the PA Personal Income Tax Return (PA-40). You will need to use other options to file IRS Form 1040 (federal tax return) or local tax returns.

  • Establishing an account through myPATH is necessary to take advantage of the Fast File program. This ensures a secure process and helps verify the information on the taxpayer’s return.

  • If you have any questions about the process, use the contact information on your letter to reach the department’s Customer Experience Center. You can also use the Online Customer Service Center to submit a question.

  • The Department of Revenue is encouraging taxpayers who have filed previously on a paper return to take advantage of Fast File. Using this streamlined online option will save time and help ensure the accuracy of your return.
