Protecting Workers: Shapiro Administration Celebrates Philadelphia Employer’s Safety Excellence

Philadelphia’s U.S. Facilities, Inc. is one of four Pennsylvania employers recognized by the Shapiro Administration with a 2025 Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence

Philadelphia, PA – Today, Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry (L&I) Secretary Nancy A. Walker visited U.S. Facilities, Inc. in Philadelphia to celebrate the company’s exceptional commitment to workplace safety and the well-being of its employees and contractors. U.S. Facilities is one of the four Pennsylvania employers awarded a 2025 Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence (GASE), reflecting its proactive risk management practices, specialized workforce training, and strong labor partnerships.

“U.S. Facilities has built a workplace where safety is the expectation, not the exception,” said Secretary Walker. “Their close collaboration with multiple unions, their commitment to thorough planning, and their emphasis on worker empowerment show what is possible when everyone has the authority and responsibility to speak up for safety. This award recognizes not only visible results, but the shared values and trust that sustain a strong safety culture over time.”

“U.S. Facilities’ dedication to safety excellence is rooted not just in compliance, but in a culture where safety starts with our people,” said Malik Majeed, U.S. Facilities CEO. “Our employees are committed to staying aware, addressing potential hazards early, and using their voices to uphold a safe workplace for all. Every voice matters, and every action reflects a shared responsibility to protect one another, our families, our clients, and the communities we serve. Through comprehensive training, transparency, and innovation, we empower our workforce to be true partners in every decision. We strive to lead the way in establishing what a modern safe workplace should represent.”

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our employees and a reminder that when safety is woven into daily operations, its impact reaches far beyond the workplace,” said Jim Dobrowolski, U.S. Facilities President. “We are deeply honored and sincerely grateful for this acknowledgment from Governor Shapiro and his Administration.”

U.S. Facilities, Inc. is a minority-owned employer with a workforce of more than 1,000 employees providing integrated facilities management services statewide. The company’s work spans preventive maintenance, electrical and plumbing systems, mechanical and HVAC operations, and environmental health and safety services. U.S. Facilities maintains strong labor partnerships across multiple trades, including property service workers, carpenters, engineers, steamfitters, and equipment operators, reflecting a shared focus on worker protection.

U.S. Facilities uses a comprehensive and adaptable safety system that ensures every worker is prepared to mitigate hazards in highly varied environments. The company prioritizes employee empowerment, ensuring that all workers and contractors understand safety protocols and have the authority to stop work if a hazard is identified.

Among the standout practices that earned U.S. Facilities statewide recognition are the following:

  • A strong, employee-centered safety culture in which workers demonstrated full awareness of PPE, safety data sheets, and safety procedures during the on-site visit.
  • Implementation of lone worker and behavior-based safety programs that provide additional protections for workers in high-risk or isolated environments.
  • A vendor management system that holds contractors to strict safety standards while supporting those needing improvement to continue serving unique operational needs.
  • A robust orientation process for new or transitioning employees that includes specialized hazard assessments when unique environments require deeper expertise.
  • Daily toolbox talks, stop work authority for employees and vendors, in-person safety trainings, and a self-audit environmental health and safety program consisting of 256 detailed criteria that all teams participate in regularly.

Since 1997, the Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence has highlighted employers with exemplary workplace safety programs that reduce injuries, strengthen partnerships between management and workers, and advance safety across Pennsylvania.

L&I supports safety across the Commonwealth through programs such as certified workplace safety committees and the Pennsylvania Training for Health and Safety (PATHS) program. More than 13,000 certified workplace safety committees have been established since 1994, protecting over 1.6 million workers and saving employers more than $900 million in workers’ compensation premiums. The PATHS program provides free, customizable safety training to employers, reaching more than 35,000 participants annually.
