ICYMI: Deadline for Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program Extended to December 31, 2025

Thanks to the Shapiro Administration extending the Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTRR) filing deadline to December 31, 2025, eligible seniors, widows and widowers, and residents with disabilities have extra time to file their rebate applications

Harrisburg, PA As a reminder, the Shapiro Administration recently extended the filing deadline for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTRR) program to December 31, 2025. The extension provides more time for eligible older Pennsylvanians, widows and widowers, and residents with disabilities to apply for rebates on property taxes or rent paid in 2024, according to Secretary of Revenue Pat Browne.

So far this year, the Department of Revenue has received more than 424,000 PTRR applications. But there are still thousands of eligible applicants who have not yet submitted an application to take advantage of the program, which is delivering historic amounts of relief to Pennsylvanians thanks to the work of Governor Josh Shapiro.

“Governor Shapiro made it a priority to push for updates that increased the income limits and the maximum rebate available through the PTRR program. The Governor’s work to expand this critical program is delivering real results by putting money back into the pockets of Pennsylvanians who need this support,” said Secretary Browne. “With this year’s filing deadline now extended, eligible Pennsylvanians have even more time to apply for a rebate that could provide meaningful financial relief. Governor Shapiro’s Work to Expand PTRR Program

Governor Shapiro, during his first year in office, signed into law a historic expansion of the Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTRR) program, which means more Pennsylvanians now qualify — and at the same time — the vast majority who qualified in prior years are seeing their rebates increase. This was the first time the program was expanded since 2006. The expansion:

  • Increased the maximum standard rebate to $1,000.
  • Increased the income cap for both homeowners and renters.
  • Increased the income cap to grow with inflation each year moving forward.

As a result, last year the PTRR program delivered 522,434 rebates totaling $319.2 million to Pennsylvanians across the Commonwealth. This was a major increase from the prior year — when 405,493 rebates totaling $192 million were distributed.

Of the 522,434 rebates distributed last year, roughly 106,400 went to first-time filers who received a rebate for the very first time.

Eligibility/How to File

The PTRR program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older. Eligible applicants must reapply for a rebate every year because rebates are based on annual income and property taxes or rent paid during the prior year.

The table below shows how much homeowners and renters who fit the eligibility criteria are eligible for, depending on their income in 2024:
