Harrisburg, PA – The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for February 2017:
StoryTime: Over and Under the Snow, Friday, February 3 10:00 – 11:00 AM
Join us as we learn about the winter woods in Ecology Hall. We’ll listen to Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner and discover how animals survive winter. Visitors will create an Over and Under the Snow -themed mural which will remain on display in Curiosity Connection through February. StoryTime is our popular reading series for children aged 3 to 5. Each reading is held in one of our galleries and is followed by a related play activity or exploration of related hands-on artifacts. StoryTime is included with general admission.
Nature Lab Programs
Hands-on experiments focusing on science topics are held bi-weekly. All programs are included with general admission.
Digging into Paleontology, Friday February 10 11:30 – 12:30 PM
Try your hand at being a Paleontologist. With the help of fossils, identify geological eras.
Simple Machines, Friday February 24 11:30 – 12:30 PM
Help us celebrate National Engineering Week! Discover how devices like the lever, screw and wedge have made work easier. Run your own experiment to see how each machine works.
Learn at Lunchtime: Compass, Calendar, and Clock, Friday, February 17 12:15 – 1:00 PM
Join us in The State Museum’s Planetarium for a special presentation of our new show, "Compass, Calendar, and Clock." This show investigates how our planet is aligned with the distant stars, allowing anyone to use the sky as a compass, a calendar and a clock. Uncover how mankind has used the sky to tell time, track yearly cycles and find direction. Show will start promptly at 12:15 PM. Visitors will not be admitted once the show has started. This presentation is included with general admission.
The Planetarium at The State Museum of Pennsylvania: The planetarium is offering two shows from January 4 through February 26:
Don’t Duck, Look Up! (Pre-K to Kindergarten)
Created for our youngest viewers, this traditional show is a fun and friendly exploration of the sky including the motions of the Sun, stars, and Earth, daytime and nighttime, and the constellations. Join Dudley the duck on his first day outside the barn and introduce your youngster to the sky.

Compass, Calendar, and Clock (6th Grade and up)
See how mankind has used the sky to tell time, track yearly cycles and find direction. Come learn how to use the sky yourself! This is a production of the Jenks Planetarium of the Jenks, Oklahoma Public School District.

Planetarium shows are $3 per person in addition to general admission. Planetarium admission is free to members of the State Museum Affiliate and the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation.

Pennsylvania at War: The Saga of the USS Pennsylvania:
This display spotlights the history and artifacts of the USS Pennsylvania. Launched shortly before the U.S. entered World War I and later damaged during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the USS Pennsylvania served as the flagship of the U.S. Navy. Chronicling the ship’s incredible witness to history, this special display features an intricately detailed, scale model of the USS Pennsylvania that depicts the ship as it appeared during the 1930s.The display also highlights the majestic centerpiece from the ship’s official Silver Service, uniforms, personal effects of crew members and a shrapnel fragment taken from the USS Pennsylvania in the days after it was damaged by a torpedo in 1945. Pennsylvania at War will be on display through Saturday, December 30, 2017.
“7 Lively Artists”:
This exhibit celebrates the 60th anniversary of Central Pennsylvania’s “en plein air” painting group, the Seven Lively Artists featuring work by the group’s original seven members as well as the current active members. The exhibit will runs through Sunday, February 12, 2017.
The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History. The State Museum offers expansive collections interpreting Pennsylvania’s fascinating heritage. With exhibits examining the dawn of geologic time, the Native American experience, the colonial and revolutionary eras, a pivotal Civil War battleground, and the commonwealth's vast industrial age, The State Museum demonstrates that Pennsylvania's story is America’s story.
Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Admission is $7 for adults (ages 12-64), $6 for senior citizens (ages 65 and up), and $5 for children (ages 1-11).
