State Museum to Host Annual “HomeSchool Day” on Sept. 28

Harrisburg - The State Museum of Pennsylvania’s upcoming “HomeSchool Day” offers a backstage pass to history, archaeology, paleontology and the fine arts. The event, tailored for families and community organizations that teach in a home setting, is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 10 AM to 3 PM.

Skilled curators and educators will take visitors on an adventure, guiding them through Pennsylvania’s most important historical milestones. Both children and parents will have the opportunity dig deep into the past, discovering the origins to the museum’s most-loved exhibits.

Visitors will spend a portion of the day engaged in Gallery Talks hosted by the museum’s curatorial and education staff. Drawing from the commonwealth’s rich heritage, these presentations will focus on archaeology, paleontology, history, fine arts and collections.

Each session will last about 20 minutes, including a brief question-and-answer period. In addition, volunteers will man a series of the hands-on stations throughout the museum allowing visitors to not only view exhibits, but to handle some of the objects.

Other scheduled activities include story time and back-to-back planetarium showings of “NASA’s Journey to Mars.”

The program fee for “HomeSchool Day” is $10 per person (adults and children) and includes admission to the planetarium. Members of the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation (including State Museum Affiliate members) will be admitted free of charge.

To register for “HomeSchool Day,” call 717-772-6997, Monday-Friday, between 9 AM and 4 PM.
