State Museum of Pennsylvania Announces November Highlights

Harrisburg, PA – The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for November 2017:

 
StoryTime: Bones, Bones, Dinosaur Bones by Byron Barton by Friday, November 3 10:00 AM
Gather with us in Paleontology at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 3 and explore a collection of dinosaur bones with our Museum’s paleontologist.  Enjoy our story Bones, Bones, Dinosaur Bones by Byron Barton, help assemble a mastodon puzzle and take home a puzzle of your own.  StoryTime is our popular series for children 3-5 years old. Each reading is held in a gallery and is followed by a related play activity or hands-on exploration of artifacts. StoryTime is included with general admission to the Museum.
 
Nature Lab: Wild Turkey Thursday, November 9 11:30 AM
Join Museum Educators in Nature Lab at 11:30 AM on Thursday, November 9 to learn about one of Pennsylvania’s largest birds, the wild turkey. Hands-on objects will be available so you can get an up-close look at this remarkable bird. This program is included with general admission to the Museum.
 
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) will host the Holiday Marketplace from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Thursday, November 16 and from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM on Friday, November 17 in the Village Square of The State Museum of Pennsylvania. The Holiday Marketplace features booths showcasing Pennsylvania-themed gifts from many of PHMC’s historic sites and museums. Join us and find that special gift from Ephrata Cloister, Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, Somerset Historical Center and The State Museum Store.  The Museum’s Plaza doors will be open during the event offering direct access to the Marketplace. 
 
3rd in the Burg: Exhibit Preview Friday, November 17 6:30 PM-8:00 PM
Visitors to Harrisburg’s 3rd in the Burg will be the first to view Every Thing of Interest Shown: T.M. Fowler’s Pennsylvania Bird’s-Eye Views, 1885-1905. During a career that spanned nearly 50 years, Thaddeus Mortimer (T.M.) Fowler produced more bird’s-eye views of American cities and towns than any other artist. Roughly half of his more than 400 views depict communities across Pennsylvania. This exhibit will showcase a sampling of original Fowler lithographic prints produced between 1885-1905. This event is free as part of 3rd in the Burg, Harrisburg’s monthly celebration of art and culture.
 
Nature Lab: Ooey Gooey Oily Process Art for ages 3-5 Thursday, November 30 11:30 AM
Join the Museum’s Educators in Nature Lab at 11:30 AM on Thursday, November 30 for Ooey Gooey Oily Process Art. Dress your child in their old clothes and discover the viscosity, density and polarity of various liquids in a fun art activity. We will experiment with primary colors! This program in included with general admission to the Museum.
 
The Planetarium at The State Museum of Pennsylvania: The planetarium is offering two shows from November 1 through November 26:
 
Constellations (4th Grade and up), Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday 11:00 AM; Saturday 11:00 AM & 2:00 PM; & Sunday 2:00 PM
What are constellations? How were they created? These are just two of the questions answered about these images in the night sky. Learn about what a constellation really is, who is responsible for creating them, and see what images we find around the globe. Explore each season and find out the basic constellations you can find in the Pennsylvania night sky.
           
We are Aliens! (4th Grade and up), Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday 1:00 PM; Saturday 12:00 Noon & 1:00 PM; & Sunday 1:00 PM
Are we alone in the Universe? Are there other worlds like ours? Is there life elsewhere in our solar system? These are just a few of the questions challenging astronomers. Gain an understanding of what types of habitable environments support life. Explore the latest research on Mars and take a closer look at how scientists are discovering extrasolar planets and determining if they are habitable. We may truly be part of a galactic community, and to them, we are the aliens. Narrated by Rupert Grint.
 
Planetarium shows are $3 per person in addition to general admission. Planetarium admission is free to members of the State Museum Affiliate and the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation.
 
November Museum Closures: The Museum will be closed Friday, November 10 for Veterans Day. Thursday and Friday November 23-24 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
 
The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History. Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  Admission is $7 for adults (ages 12-64), $6 for senior citizens (ages 65 and up), and $5 for children (ages 1-11).
