Scott Weidensaul presents Mountains of the Heart: A Natural History of the Appalachians
Join us on Sunday, August 7 at 2 PM as renowned author and naturalist Scott Weidensaul discusses his book Mountains of the Heart: A Natural History of the Appalachians. This presentation will be followed by a special tour of the Museum’s Working Together for Wildlife: Three Decades of Pennsylvania’s Nature in Art exhibit. Included with general admission to the museum.

Join us on Sunday, August 21 at 2 PM, to explore the 49th annual Art of the State exhibition with Beverly Lichkus, special assistant for Art of the State, as she and first prize winner for sculpture Peter Frantz of Tyrone, PA. co-lead a casual tour sharing their insights into the show. Included with general admission to the museum.
August 2016 Learn at Lunchtime
Learn at Lunchtime features a variety of engaging discussions and presentations. This program, included with general admission to The State Museum, runs from 12:15 to 12:45 PM on the following dates:
Friday, August 5 Carboniferous Forest
Hear the story of our newly renovated Carboniferous Forest from acting curator of paleontology and geology Steven Jasinski. The exhibit features all new animal specimens, interpretation and light and sound. The background murals provide depth to this dense, tropical environment. Come learn why the Carboniferous Period plays such an important role in Pennsylvania today.
Friday, August 12 Art of State
Explore the 49th annual Art of the State exhibition. Art of the State is recognized as the official, statewide juried competition for Pennsylvania artists. Jurors selected artwork from five categories, Craft, Painting, Photography, Sculpture and Work on Paper.
August 2016: This Month in Nature Lab
This summer, take a staycation to The State Museum where you’ll discover interactive, hands-on learning experiences guided by specialists in fields ranging from archaeology to environmental protection. Museum curators and representatives of various Pennsylvania State agencies will engage in live educational presentations as they lead visitors of all ages through the rich natural world of Pennsylvania. These presentations are included with general admission to the Museum. All programs start at 11:30 AM.

Curiosity Connection StoryTime Summer Series
StoryTime at Curiosity Connection is our popular reading series for children aged 3-5 that takes place at select times during the calendar year. Held in Curiosity Connection, The State Museum’s engaging early learning space, each reading includes a related play activity with some programs continuing into a gallery. StoryTime programs begin at 10:00 AM and are included with general admission to the Museum.

The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 25 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History®. The State Museum offers expansive collections interpreting Pennsylvania’s fascinating heritage. With exhibits examining the dawn of geologic time, the Native American experience, the colonial and revolutionary era, a pivotal Civil War battleground, and the commonwealth's vast industrial age, The State Museum demonstrates that Pennsylvania's story is America’s story.
Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Admission is $7 for adults (ages 12-64), $6 for senior citizens (ages 65 and up), and $5 for children (ages 1-11).
